Clay Mosby - a Confederate colonel from Virginia - is a charming rogue who loves to gamble and take risks. The Ambrosia Club has become the center of his financial empire. He flourishes on the gritty mix of business and pleasure that has made him the wealthiest and most powerful citizen in Curtis Wells. Mosby has come to view Curtis Wells as his personal dominion. He backs ventures, sells protection and collects IOUs which he calls in when necessary. He can be a good and loyal friend, but only those foolish enough to cross him will discover just how far his power reaches. He's worked hard to establish his dark vision for the community, and God help anyone who stands in his way.

fought in Tennessee at some point, and might have fought in Gettysburg
his wife, Mary, was raped and murdered by Union soldiers (1864-1865?)
Hannah resembles Mary; so Mosby was infatuated with Hannah until the time of her death in 1878
Newt Call, husband of the deceased Hannah, is Mosby's chief adversary and hates Mosby for coveting his wife
entire family massacred in the Civil War by Captain Armstrong (who commits suicide)
boyhood home, Hatten Willows, also destroyed at that time
lost "everything" by the time he was 23
was prisoner of Yankee prison camp during the last year of the War
